Kelley D. Salas is a Spanish to English translator and editor specializing in nonfiction and children’s literature. Her translations have been published in Words Without Borders, Plough Quarterly, and Literal Magazine, among others. She also translates and edits texts related to health care and medicine, education, journalism, and social sciences. Recent translation projects include sample chapters from a young adult novel, two middle grade novels, a graphic novel excerpt, magazine essays, many scientific journal articles, and several scripts and pitches for a major TV producer. Recent copyediting projects include an anthology of stories by women veterans and a bilingual board book.

Salas holds a graduate certificate in translation and a master’s degree in curriculum and instruction, both from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. A native English speaker, she studied both French and Italian before becoming fluent in Spanish early in her career through study abroad, professional use, and extensive travel. She was a bilingual teacher for over a decade; through the eyes of her students, she fell in love with Spanish and English children’s literature and gained an ear for what works. Salas served on the editorial board of independent magazine and book publisher Rethinking Schools, where she wrote and translated articles, and provided copyediting and proofreading services. She wrote more than a dozen articles and was co-editor of The New Teacher Book.

Salas is a member of the Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators (SCBWI), the American Literary Translators Association (ALTA), the American Translators Association (ATA), and the Editorial Freelancers Association (EFA). She serves on the board of directors for the Midwest Association of Translators and Interpreters (MATI). She is certified by the ATA for Spanish to English translation since 2008, and is a certified court interpreter in Wisconsin since 2018.
